Tyneside Badminton Centre Director Steve Abbott has been recognised for more than 40 years service to badminton after receiving a Sport Newcastle Unsung Hero Award.

The award celebrates Steve’s outstanding contribution to the development of growth of badminton across Northumberland and beyond, where he has dedicated decades of voluntary service to supporting players, competitions and the wider badminton community.

Steve joined the management committee of Northumberland Badminton Association in the mid-1980’s and has remained a driving force within the organisation ever since. Over the last four decades, he has organised and delivered countless tournaments, county match and badminton events, contributing more time and commitment than almost anyone involved within the county game.

Today, Steve continues to serve as Vice Chairman and Honorary Vice President of Northumberland Badminton Association, and continues to play a leading role in supporting the sport at every level. He also serves as Chair of the county selectors and competitive play sub-committee, helping to oversee player development and opportunities across the region.

Alongside his county commitments, Steve was one of the key figures responsible for establishing Tyneside Badminton Centre in 2011. His vision and dedication has helped create what is now recognised as the home of badminton in the North East, providing a dedicated badminton facility visited by thousand of players, clubs and community groups every year.

Steve also represents Northumberland Badminton Association at Badminton England meetings, ensuring that the interests of players and clubs in the county are represented at a national level.

The Sport Newcastle Unsung Hero Awards celebrate individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to grassroots sport, often working behind the scenes and without seeking recognition. Steves passion and commitment has helped strengthen badminton for generations of players across the North East, making him a worthy recipient of the award.

Congratulations, Steve, and thank you for everything you continue to do for badminton.
